The human “8×8” rule is simple—but it’s not evidence-based for pets. Dogs and cats vary by size, metabolism, and heat dissipation. Weight-based estimates (mL/kg/day), adjusted for activity, diet, climate, and breed, are safer and more practical.

• Dogs: start ~60–70 mL/kg/day
• Cats: start ~50 mL/kg/day
